Meet Larry and Judy Compton! Larry (73) and Judy (71) have been married for 51 years – which is remarkable –and find that staying active is the key to living happier and healthier lives.
Larry and Judy have been members at Bellin Health Fitness since 2008. They didn’t need much motivation to start a fitness routine because they have always lived a healthy life and continue on their fitness journey today. They come to the fitness center and do a strength and cardio workout one hour a day, five days a week…now that’s what I call dedication!
The obstacles that they both had to overcome was their cancer diagnosis and other surgeries. Recently, doctors discovered that Larry had cells from a previous cancer attached to his lung and needed a lobe of his lung taken out which was followed with nine weeks of radiation treatment. Within a two-week period, he also had to have a gallstone removed and then had to have his gall bladder completely taken out later that same day. Needless to say, he has had quite the battle but he has persevered. When he gets approval from his doctor, he will begin working with one of our certified Personal Trainers, Liza Margelofsky, a to get back on track. Judy has also had to battle cancer two times which obviously makes it twice as hard but she has been working with Tim Grell, our Cancer Exercise Specialist to get back to the healthy lifestyle she is used to.
Bellin Health Fitness has helped Larry and Judy with their day-to-day workout routines as well as their rehabilitation after surgeries and treatment. Besides the help of our personal trainers, five years ago, Larry asked for help when he was experiencing low back pain and received help from a Bellin Physical Therapist. She gave him specific exercises and stretches that he still uses to this very day.
Because Larry and Judy were both so healthy and fit to begin with, their lives haven’t changed much since their diagnosis and surgeries. They continue to golf and fish which they love to do and say that is absolutely wonderful! Fishing is something they’ve been doing for a long time, sometimes 5-6 hours a day and are happy that they can continue to do that together. They feel that they couldn’t have done it without the help of Bellin Fitness and their staff.
When I asked, what advice would you give to help others, their response was, “Give it a try. It can be addicting in a good way.”
