Mary Doemel

Mary has a husband, Tim, daughter, Stephanie, son-in-law and two grandchildren whom she enjoys spending time with. Outside of working out at Bellin Health Fitness Center, Mary likes to read, bike, quilt, snow shoe and work in her flower beds.
Mary first began her fitness journey after dropping her daughter off at college in 1989. She decided it was time for her to do something for herself. So she joined Bellin Health Fitness Center!
Mary’s biggest obstacle she had to overcome was her diagnosis with stage 4 cancer. She had a sarcoma tumor and a tumor in her left lung. Mary was in the hospital being treated with 24 hour chemo for 6 days. She continued this chemo regiment every 2 weeks for 4 sessions total. Throughout this chemo regiment she was also getting blood transfusions and was able to beat cancer in 2009.
She attributes staying active and being physically fit helped her beat cancer. “My doctors were amazed at what I was doing. They told me they used me for their poster child.” Mary states that The Cancer Wellness Program was a huge help as well. Her doctors were very surprised at how quickly Mary was able to recover after her surgeries. Being physically fit before cancer and surgeries really helped with recovery and beating cancer.
For her workouts, Mary workouts a lot on her own using the row machine and doing hip and leg exercises to help keep her active. She does take a spin class once a week to mix things up a bit, and once in awhile works with her personal trainer Stefanie to check in and make sure she is doing exercises properly. Mary likes to focus on total body workouts to help her stay active. She doesn’t necessarily have any short term fitness goals, but her long term goals include staying active and continue to work out five days a week.
Bellin Health Fitness Center has helped Mary be more aware of how important it is to stay fit. She also takes a spin class every Friday. Mary’s advice is, “If you don’t workout, get started! It can change your life!”
