Barb (80) has been married to her husband, Will, since 1973…congratulations on 45 years of marriage! Together they have three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She joined Bellin Health Fitness in 2010 at the recommendation of her doctor. She has always been very active and loved to play various sports back in the day. Once Barb started coming to Bellin Health Fitness, she found that she really enjoyed the challenge of the Group Fitness classes!
Along her fitness journey, Barb had to overcome some obstacles. She fought exhaustion brought on by a bleeding ulcer and Emphysema. She also struggled with the pain of Arthritis.
Her most notable success happened this past June. Barb wasn’t able to participate in the Bellin Health Fitness “Walking Tacos” Member Appreciation event because her knee was causing her so much pain. Liza Margelofsky, one of Bellin Health Fitness’ personal trainers, had asked Barb why she wasn’t participating. When Barb told her about her knee pain, Liza offered to take a look at it. Liza showed her how to stretch her quad and calf muscles properly. At that time, Barb also mentioned that walking up and down the stairs was very painful so Liza had her try the stairs after they were done stretching. To Barb’s complete amazement, her knee didn’t hurt at all! After experiencing little to no pain in her knee that day, Barb began stretching her quad and calf muscles daily and has had no knee pain since!
Barb’s life hasn’t changed much because she is still active. She finds that if she sits for any length of time she begins to “feels her age.” So that’s as good a reason as any to keep herself moving…because she wants to feels young! One big change however, is the many close connections and friendships she has made since coming to Bellin Health Fitness. The encouragement and support of her new friends has helped her through the loss of her dog because instead of sitting around grieving she came here.
Barb’s advice to others……Attitude, attitude, attitude! Stay active and meet new people because she feels that interaction with people is so important.
