Did you know that there’s a national movement to “find your passion?” Do you feel the pressure to find yours? Well no need to worry, you’ll be relieved to learn that discovering your passion in life is not the beginning (or even the end!) of the road…it’s a process that happens over and over throughout your life by trying new things and engaging in the world around you.

You may hear people say, “Passion is the result of action, not the cause of it.” Well, what does that mean exactly? Terri Trespicio states in her TED Talk titled “Stop Searching for Your Passion,” that passion is not something you find. It’s something you create as you try new things and learn what you love.

It’s also common for people to share that they found a passion for something after taking action to improve their health. Like a gentleman who found an unexpected love for running after never running before when trying to lose weight for his 10th anniversary. Or like three friends who found a passion for helping homeless women in the Green Bay area after collecting purses to fill with hygiene items

With the New Year right around the corner, we want you to aim high to find purpose and passion in your life through trying new things. You can even consider your next donation or volunteer activity as an investment in yourself, as well as an investment in your favorite cause or community.

Are ready to take action and try something new? Here are some steps to help you get started…

  • STEP 1:  Think about how you can help. Whether sharing your time, talent, or treasure, giving has been shown in a variety of studies to improve physical and emotional health, as well as provide a sense of purpose.
  • STEP 2:  Schedule your annual physical. Make sure you’re physically ready to follow your volunteer passions. If you need help finding a primary care physician, go to bellin.org/find-a-physician or call (800) 528-7883.
  • STEP 3:   Take another step outside your comfort zone. What have you always wondered about? What’s on your bucket list? Once you’re in the habit of trying new things, make the next step something extraordinary or memorable.

The most important step is to engage in the world around you. Find ways to share your time, talent, or treasure this month…and you just might also find your passion!
